What is at the root of our clothing choices and sense of style? Is it shaped by our family,
or is it more influenced by peers? Or has our sense of style been usurped by the ubiquitous
media and penetrating fashion industries? Or does our choice go deeper inside and stem
from our own sense of self and self-worth?

Tracy McWilliams tells us in “Dress to Express; Seven Secrets to Overcoming Closet Trauma
and Revealing Your Inner Beauty” that all of the above apply. In fact, there is a lot more to how
we dress than just dressing according to our body’s shape and size. McWilliams suggests
three key factors in how we see ourselves and the way we choose to dress; influences from
our parents, siblings and friends, our experiences and our sense of self.

The influences of parents, siblings and friends play the strongest role in designing our style
choices during our youth. We are influenced by not only what our parents and peers wore, but
what they like and dislike. Their opinions and attitudes still influence our interpretation of style
today.

All of our life experiences contribute to the way we dress ourselves. Whether it comes from
how our cultural influence or traumatic life events or uplifting and transforming life events, our
experiences shape our clothing preferences.

Our innate sense of self also influences our clothing and style choices. Confidence in our
choices of clothing, determine how our style is interpreted by others. Our sense of self-worth
plays a significant role in how we carry the style we have chosen. If we are confident, it is
apparent and our style is obvious, but when we are not confident in ourselves, it is transparent
in the way we wear our clothes.

Use these three factors as a starting point to clean out your emotional closet. Explore why you
are wearing sweats multiple days at a time, examine why you always wear boat necks. Have
you always worn boat necks because your mother told you it’s your ideal collar or because it
actually is your best look?  It is time to set yourself free from already always thinking about why
you wear what you wear. Freedom is wearing what represents and reflects you at your best.
